BACKGROUND: Approximately 30% of post-operative breast cancer patients develop shoulder joint movement disorders affecting routine upper limb movement. This study discusses the impact of a neuromuscular joint facilitation (NJF) method on the physical function of breast cancer patients experiencing shoulder dysfunction during chemotherapy after radical surgery. METHODS: This study included 162 female patients who have unilateral breast cancer in a cancer hospital in China. They developed shoulder joint mobility disorders during chemotherapy within 1-3 months postoperatively. These patients were divided into three groups: NJF, conventional rehabilitation (conventional group), and control groups. The clinical examination included the maximum passive and active range of motion (ROM) of the shoulder (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, and external and internal rotation). Other evaluations included a pain score using a visual analog scale (VAS), grip strength, and supraspinatus muscle thickness. All tests were evaluated pre-and post-intervention. RESULTS: The NJF group showed a significant increase in all shoulder ROM angles post-intervention. In the conventional group, all other ROM values increased significantly, except passive external rotation ROM. In the control group, all other ROM values increased significantly, except passive and active external rotation ROM. All three groups had decreased VAS scores, increased grip strength, and supraspinatus muscle thickness post-intervention during active abduction. In the control group, the supraspinatus contraction rate decreased significantly at 60° and 90° abduction post-intervention compared to that at pre-intervention. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that NJF during chemotherapy had positive clinical intervention effects, improving shoulder joint mobility disorders, pain, grip strength, and external rotation following radical breast cancer surgery. Introduction: This study is a cross-sectional study that investigated the factors influencing shoulder mobility in terms of pain, grip strength, and supraspinatus muscle thickness in patients with impaired shoulder mobility during chemotherapy after radical breast cancer surgery. Methods: This study included 165 female patients with unilateral breast cancer who had shoulder joint mobility disorders during chemotherapy within 3 months after surgery. The clinical examination included the maximum active range of motion of the shoulder (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, external rotation, and internal rotation), pain score (visual analog scale [VAS]), grip strength, and supraspinatus muscle thickness. Results: During shoulder abduction, supraspinatus muscle thickness was greatest at 90°, lowest at 0°, and higher at 60° than at 30° (p < 0.01). The factors influencing the active movement of shoulder flexion were the VAS score, body weight, grip strength, and supraspinatus contraction rate (R2 = 0.295), while the factors influencing active shoulder abduction were the VAS score, body weight, grip strength, supraspinatus muscle thickness (drooping position), and supraspinatus contraction rate (R2 = 0.295). Moreover, the factors influencing the active movement of shoulder external rotation were age, VAS score, body weight, grip strength, and supraspinatus muscle thickness (drooping position) (R2 = 0.258). There were no significant results from multiple linear regressions for shoulder extension, adduction, or internal rotation. Conclusion: Pain, weight, grip strength, supraspinatus muscle thickness, and supraspinatus distensibility are the main factors affecting shoulder flexion, abduction, and external rotation. In addition, supraspinatus muscle thickness and contraction rate may be a new index for assessing shoulder dysfunction.

Tech giants are large, well-known internet and technology companies. Employees of such companies are generally expected to work fast and for long periods of time, causing them to experience high occupational fatigue. The relationship between occupational fatigue and well-being is complex. Furthermore, in the context of the workplace, unhealthy eating behaviour may be used as a mechanism to cope with fatigue and stress. This study explored the relationship between occupational fatigue, well-being and unhealthy eating behaviour within this specific professional population. Study 1 used qualitative research methods, in which in-depth interviews were conducted with staff working at 13 tech giants in Shenzhen, China (N = 50). The findings revealed that work-related stress and occupational fatigue are common among employees working for tech giants. Additionally, factors such as unhealthy eating behaviour, workload, working hours and workplace interpersonal relationships were found to influence occupational well-being. Study 2 involved a cross-sessional survey of 237 employees of tech giants. The results indicated that occupational fatigue negatively impacts occupational well-being and that unhealthy eating behaviours play a moderating role between occupational fatigue and occupational well-being. These findings highlight the significance of adopting appropriate measures to improve the situation and cope with the effects of occupational fatigue by managing unhealthy eating behaviours.

Logistics personnel in Chinese universities are facing unbalanced costs and benefit from overloaded work with minimum wages, which impede school development and their well-being. However, the logistics staff population has been neglected in past investigations pertaining to psychological health conditions. The present study aimed to examine the positive well-being, work-related rumination, and work engagement of logistics staff, their correlations, and the factors affecting well-being in 282 Chinese university logistics staff via the Smith Well-being Questionnaire, the Work-Related Rumination Questionnaire, and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. The results indicated low levels of well-being and high levels of work-related rumination and work engagement among Chinese university logistics staff. The presence of positive attitudes towards life and work and high levels of work engagement predicts enhanced well-being, while the presence of negative characteristics and work-related rumination predicts decreased well-being. In situations where the working hours and work duties are challenging to change, universities can regularly schedule psychological counselling sessions for logistics staff to improve their well-being.

Background: Cochlear implantation (CI) outcomes in patients with auditory neuropathy (AN) are variable, which hampers patients' decisions on CI. Objective: This study aims to assess the outcomes of CI in individuals diagnosed with AN and to examine the various factors that may influence the effectiveness of this intervention. Methods: A total of 75 patients diagnosed with AN were included in the study. The hearing threshold, the score of categories of auditory performance (CAP), speech intelligibility rating (SIR), and speech audiometry were tested. Genetic testing was conducted by medical exome sequencing in 46 patients. Results: After CI, the average aided hearing threshold for patients with prelingual and post-lingual onset was 38.25 ± 6.63 dB and 32.58 ± 9.26 dB, respectively; CAP score improved to 5.52 ± 1.64 (p < 0.001) and 6.00 ± 0.96 (p < 0.001), respectively; SIR score increased to 3.57 ± 1.22 (p < 0.001) and 4.15 ± 0.95 (p < 0.001), respectively. Maximum speech recognition ranged from 58 to 93% for prelingual onset patients and 43 to 98% for those with post-lingual onset. Speech outcomes of CI in cases with cochlear nerve (CN) deficiency were significantly poorer (p = 0.008). Molecular etiologies, including TWIST1, ACTG1, m.A7445G, and a copy-number variant (CNV) carrying ACTB, were related to AN here. Conclusion: CI is a viable therapy option for patients with AN; CN deficiency might impact outcomes of CI.

[Purpose] To measure the reliability of and quantify the force on the spinous process during lumbar neuromuscular joint facilitation using mechanical measuring gloves. [Participants and Methods] We recruited 12 healthy participants. The operator wore a mechanical measuring glove and performed evaluations in the four modes of neuromuscular joint facilitation of the lumbar spine. The mechanical glove was used to measure the force applied by the fingers on the spinous process during the intervention. [Results] The reliability of measuring the supraspinous force during lumbar neuromuscular joint facilitation with mechanical gloves was found to be good; the force was 30.9 ± 6.6 N for front lifting, 37.1 ± 9.1 N for rear descent, 36.8 ± 9.0 N for forward descent, and 24.6 ± 4.7 N for rear lifting. Overall, the average force was 32.3 ± 9.0 N. No statistical difference was observed between passive and resistance motion. [Conclusion] This study confirmed that the measurement of the force on the spinous process in lumbar neuromuscular joint facilitation using mechanical measurement gloves has good reliability. Furthermore, we determined the average force exerted on the spinous process during lumbar neuromuscular joint facilitation and quantified the operation specifications of this manipulation were.

Realizing the simultaneous speedy detection of multiple mycotoxins in contaminated food and feed is of great practical importance in the domain of food manufacturing and security. Herein, a fluorescent aptamer sensor based on self-assembled DNA double-crossover was developed and used for effective simultaneous quantitative detection of aflatoxins M1 and B1 by fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). Fluorescent dye-modified aflatoxin M1 and B1 aptamers are selected as recognition elements and signal probes, and DNA double crosses are consistently locked by the aflatoxin aptamers, which results in a "turn-off" of the fluorescent signal. In the presence of AFM1 and AFB1, the aptamer sequences are more inclined to form Apt-AFM1 and Apt-AFB1 complexes, and the fluorescent probes are released from the DNA double-crossing platform, leading to an enhanced fluorescent signal (Cy3: 568 nm; Cy5: 660 nm). Under the optimal conditions, the signal response of the constructed fluorescent aptamer sensor showed good linearity with the logarithm of AFM1 and AFB1 concentrations, with detection limits of 6.24 pg/mL and 9.0 pg/mL, and a wide linear range of 0.01-200 ng/mL and 0.01-150 ng/mL, respectively. In addition, the effect of potential interfering substances in real samples was analyzed, and the aptasensor presented a good interference immunity. Moreover, by modifying and designing aptamer probes, the sensor can be applied to high-throughput simultaneous screening of other analytes, providing a new approach for the development of fluorescent aptamer sensors.

Fatigue is a common experience in everyday life. People who experience fatigue will have more intense negative emotions, and at the same time, their positive emotions will decrease, impairing the individual's emotional processing ability. In previous research, mindfulness meditation reduces the intensity of negative emotional stimuli. However, if individuals continue to be affected by negative emotions when they are fatigued, it is unclear whether mindfulness can buffer the negative association between fatigue and emotions. This study examined whether mindfulness meditation affects the association between fatigue and emotions, using event-related potentials (ERPs). One hundred and forty-five participants completed the experiment. They were randomly assigned to the Mindfulness or Non-mindfulness group; and they were presented with positive, neutral, or negative pictures in an emotional processing task before and after mindfulness or rest. Late positive potential (LPP) is an important indicator of emotional stimuli perceived by individuals, and positive or negative pictures can induce an increase in LPP amplitude more than neutral pictures. Our findings suggest that fatigue significantly affected individuals' LPP amplitudes in the early, mid, and late windows in the Non-mindfulness group, specifically, the more fatigued individuals had lower LPP amplitudes, but not in the Mindfulness group. These results suggest that in a state of fatigue, mindful individuals are able to maintain responsiveness to emotional stimuli by maintaining LPP amplitude. Our study has demonstrated that mindfulness meditation, to some extent, offsets the negative association of fatigue with the neural activation of emotions.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can improve cognitive function in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Few biomarkers are currently available to predict cognitive response in MDD patients. This study aimed to examine whether cortical plasticity played an important role in improving cognitive deficits in MDD patients treated with rTMS. METHODS: A total of 66 MDD patients and 53 healthy controls were recruited. MDD patients were randomly assigned to receive 10 Hz active or sham rTMS 5 days per week for 4 weeks. Cognitive function was assessed using the Repeatable Battery for assessing Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), while depressive symptoms were assessed with the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD-24) before and after treatment. We combined transcranial magnetic stimulation and muscle surface electrophysiological recording to measure plasticity in motor cortex areas in healthy controls at baseline and MDD patients before and after treatment. RESULTS: Compared with healthy controls, cortical plasticity was impaired in MDD patients. Moreover, cortical plasticity was correlated with RBANS total score at baseline in MDD patients. After 4-week 10 Hz rTMS treatment, the impaired cortical plasticity was restored to some extent. Interestingly, 10 Hz rTMS treatment produced effective therapeutic effects on immediate memory, attention, and RBANS total score. Pearson correlation analysis shows that improvements in plasticity were positively correlated with improvement of immediate memory and RBANS total score. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show for the first time that 10 Hz rTMS can effectively treat impaired cortical plasticity and cognitive impairment in MDD patients and that changes in plasticity and cognitive function are closely related, which may indicate that motor cortical plasticity may play a vital role in cognitive impairment and that cortical plasticity may serve as a potential predictive biomarker for cognitive improvement in MDD patients.

BACKGROUND: Occupational health factors such as shift work, sleep, fatigue, and work environment jeopardise the health and safety of gas station workers. This calls for new research to investigate how the working environment and characteristics impact the occupational health of workers at gas stations. However, minimal research has been conducted in this field, especially those involving psychological and behavioural factors, occupational stress, and so forth. OBJECTIVE: This review was performed to investigate the present condition of the occupational risk of gas station workers in this safety-critical position. METHODS: Five databases (Web of Science, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Google Scholar, and PsycINFO) were searched for relevant peer-reviewed studies. Results were selected according to these criteria: studies on fatigue, shift work, sleep, and physical and mental health of gas station employees; published on or before November 11, 2021; papers in English. RESULTS: Twenty studies were considered for the final analysis. The results showed that shift work at gas stations leads to psychological and physiological problems. The psychological consequences included anxiety, stress, and depression, while the physiological consequences included biochemical changes and lifestyle consequences. CONCLUSION: Shift work and the specific working environment of gas station employees adversely affect their sleep, stress levels, physical and mental health, and turnover intention. This systematic review allowed us to consider the occupational risk factors that can lead to sickness or accidents and contribute to reducing these risk factors. Realistic countermeasures ought to be established and interventions must be explored to mitigate risks to life, property, and the environment in operating gas stations.

Fracture liaison service (FLS) is a management system for osteoporotic fractures, its difficulty lies in long-term management. Through this pilot single-center study, we found that FLS combined with an internet-based follow-up service (online home nursing care) can economically and conveniently monitor patients, reduce falls and refractures, and improve care and medication adherence. INTRODUCTION: Among potential e-health platforms, mobile internet encompasses the largest user group of mobile instant messaging software in Asia and offers strong interaction, low cost, and fast speed. The online home nursing care model prevents unnecessary hospital admissions and readmissions. This study aims to explore the effects of a fracture liaison service (FLS) model combined with online home nursing care on patients with fragility hip fracture. METHODS: Patients discharged after November 2020 received FLS care combined with online home nursing care. Patients discharged from May 2020 to November 2020 received only routine discharge guidance and were classified as the control group. The Parker Mobility Score (PMS), Medical Outcomes Study 36-item short-form health survey (MOS SF-36), general medication adherence scale (GMAS), complication rate, and fall/refracture rates were used to evaluate the efficacy of the FLS combined with online home nursing care during the 52-week follow-up period. RESULTS: Eighty-nine patients with complete follow-up information were included in the analysis at the 52-week follow-up. The FLS combined with online home nursing care was associated with improved osteoporosis patient care, including increased medication adherence (64.58% in the control group and 90.24% in the observation group), improved mental quality of life, reduced fall/refracture rate (12.5% and 4.88%, respectively), and reduced rates of bedsores and joint stiffness; however, there was no effect on functional recovery within 1 year. CONCLUSIONS: We recommend the combination of FLS with online home nursing care, considering the local environment, to economically and conveniently monitor patients, reduce falls and refractures, and improve care and medication adherence.

Objectives: Recently, studies on microRNAs (miRNAs) and their targets and related genes have provided new therapeutic opportunities for controlling intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). We aimed to investigate the effects of miR-148a-3p overexpression on IDD progression. Materials and Methods: This study used microRNA microarrays to analyze key regulators of IDD. Q-PCR was used to verify the IL-1ß-induced down-regulation of miR-148a-3p expression both in nucleus pulposus (NP) tissues of IDD patients and in degenerated NP cells (NPCs) of rats. Rat NPC micromass cultures and ex vivo intervertebral disc (IVD) culture models were established, and histological staining was performed to verify the effect of miR-148a-3p on the general morphology and proteoglycan and collagen contents of IVDs. In addition, q-PCR and western blotting analyses were performed to examine the expression of ECM molecules and matrix-degrading enzymes. A luciferase reporter assay was used to confirm the target genes of miR-148a-3p. Results: Our data revealed that miR-148a-3p was down-regulated in IDD. Overexpression of miR-148a-3p had no effect on ACAN or COL2A1 gene expression but decreased MMP3, MMP13, and ADAMTS5 gene expression. The matrix deposited by miR-148a-3p-overexpressing rat NPCs contained high levels of proteoglycans and collagen. The ex vivo experiments verified that agomiR-148a-3p alleviated the NPC matrix degradation induced by IL-1ß. A luciferase reporter assay confirmed that miR-148a-3p directly targeted ADAMTS5 and MMP13. Conclusion: We proved that miR-148a-3p can attenuate ECM loss and protect NP function by inhibiting matrix-degrading enzymes.

Lucid dreams are defined as dreams in which the dreamers are aware of the fact that they are dreaming as dreams continue. It has been ~12 years since the last review of the efficiency of lucid dream induction techniques was conducted. Hence, the present study aimed to review the lucid dream induction techniques published in the past decade. The second aim was to propose a modified classification for the existing lucid dream induction techniques, including cognitive techniques, external stimulation, substance intervention, and cortical stimulation. The third aim was to assess the methodological quality of the studies included in the review. It was hypothesised that, comparing with the studies included in the last review, the studies included in the present review had better overall methodological quality. A total of 19 peer-reviewed studies were included and analysed in the present review, from which 14 lucid dream induction techniques were identified. The results indicated that the mnemonic induction of lucid dream technique was the most effective for inducing lucid dreams. Moreover, two new techniques, the senses-initiated lucid dream technique and galantamine intervention, might also be competitive candidates for lucid dream induction but further replications are needed. As hypothesised, the overall methodological quality of the studies included in the present review was higher than that of the studies included the previous review. In all, 17 studies had moderate methodological quality, whereas only three studies had poor methodological quality.

Background: Routine academic events may cause fatigue and impair sleep quality. This research aimed to examine the prevalence and risk factors for academic fatigue among college students and its adverse effects on well-being and sleep. A brief exercise intervention was also evaluated. Methods: A total of 864 college students (33.5% female) filled out self-reported questionnaires with few open-ended questions. Fatigue and sleep quality were assessed using the translated version of the Smith Well-being Questionnaire and the Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Spearman correlations, logistic regression analysis, and t-tests were used to test the hypotheses. In a second study, 29 female participants took part in an exercise intervention aimed at reducing fatigue and improving sleep. Results: Among the effective respondents, nearly 40% reported higher academic-related fatigue, and a few reported high-quality sleep. Negative coping styles, workload, stress, and disturbed surroundings had a significant positive predictive effect on academic fatigue. In addition, adverse consequences of fatigue were found for physical health and academic-life balance, and a significant, positive relationship was observed between the degree of fatigue and PSQI score (p < 0.01). The exercise study showed some beneficial effects of the intervention for both sleep and fatigue outcomes. Conclusion: Fatigue is common and widely reported among Chinese college students, and it may have a major negative impact on their health. Increased awareness of daily academic fatigue and its impact on college students is important for individuals, schools, and society. Exercise may be a simple way to improve sleep and reduce fatigue.

Sclerotinia stem rot (SSR), caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, is among the most devastating diseases in Brassica napus worldwide. Conventional breeding for SSR resistance in Brassica species is challenging due to the limited availability of resistant germplasm. Therefore, genetic engineering is an attractive approach for developing SSR-resistant Brassica crops. Compared with the constitutive promoter, an S. sclerotiorum-inducible promoter would avoid ectopic expression of defense genes that may cause plant growth deficits. In this study, we generated a S. sclerotiorum-inducible promoter. pBnGH17D7, from the promoter of B. napus glycosyl hydrolase 17 gene (pBnGH17). Specifically, 5'-deletion and promoter activity analyses in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana plants defined a 189 bp region of pBnGH17 which was indispensable for S. sclerotiorum-induced response. Compared with pBnGH17, pBnGH17D7 showed a similar response upon S. sclerotiorum infection, but lower activity in plant tissues in the absence of S. sclerotiorum infection. Moreover, we revealed that the transcription factor BnTGA7 directly binds to the TGACG motif in pBnGH17D7 to activate BnGH17. Ultimately, pBnGH17D7 was exploited for engineering Sclerotinia-resistant B. napus via host-induced gene silencing. It induces high expression of siRNAs against the S. sclerotiorum pathogenic factor gene specifically during infection, leading to increased resistance.

Amino Acids are not only major nutrient sources, but also serve as chemical signals to control cellular growth. Rab1A recently emerged as a key component in amino acid sensing and signaling to activate the mTOR complex1 (mTORC1). In a recently published study [1], we generated tamoxifen-inducible, conditional whole-body Rab1A knockout in adult mice. These mice are viable but develop hyperglycemia and glucose intolerance. Interestingly, Rab1A ablation selectively reduces insulin expression and pancreatic beta-cell population. Mechanistically, branched chain amino acids (BCAA), through the Rab1A-mTORC1 complex, promote the stability and nuclear localization of Pdx1, a master transcription factor that controls growth, function and identity of pancreatic beta-cells. These findings reveal a role and underlying mechanism by which amino acids control body's glucose level through a beta-cell specific function by the Rab1A-mTORC1-Pdx1 signaling axis, which has implications in both diabetes and cancer.

[Purpose] This study examined the measurement reliability and cooperative movement of the pelvic floor and transverse abdominal muscles. [Participants and Methods] The participants were seven healthy adult females. Transverse abdominal muscle thickness and bladder floor elevation were measured under the following conditions during active exercise and during resistance exercise: the resting state, maximum contraction of the transverse abdominal muscle, maximum contraction of the pelvic floor muscle, and maximum co-contraction of the transverse abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. Measurements were taken at rest and under each exercise condition. [Results] The intraclass correlation coefficients of transverse abdominal muscle thickness and bladder floor elevation showed high reproducibility under all conditions. The maximum contraction of the pelvic floor muscle showed a high correlation with the maximum co-contraction of the transverse abdominal muscle and pelvic floor muscle during resistance exercise. A significant regression line was found between transverse abdominal muscle thickness and bladder floor elevation under all conditions. The regression equation was as follows: transverse abdominal muscle thickness=0.113 bladder floor elevation+0.377 (r2=0.21). [Conclusion] This study demonstrated that the measurement reliability of the transverse abdominal and pelvic floor muscles is high, and that both muscles exhibit cooperative movement.

The 12-transmembrane protein Patched (Ptc1) acts as a suppressor for Hedgehog (Hh) signaling by depleting sterols in the cytoplasmic membrane leaflet that are required for the activation of downstream regulators. The positive modulator Hh inhibits Ptc1's transporter function by binding to Ptc1 and its co-receptors, which are locally concentrated in invaginated microdomains known as caveolae. Here, we reconstitute the mouse Ptc1 into lipid nanodiscs and determine its structure using single-particle cryoelectron microscopy. The structure is overall similar to those in amphipol and detergents but displays various conformational differences in the transmembrane region. Although most particles show monomers, we observe Ptc1 dimers with distinct interaction patterns and different membrane curvatures, some of which are reminiscent of caveolae. We find that an extramembranous "hand-shake" region rich in hydrophobic and aromatic residues mediates inter-Ptc1 interactions under different membrane curvatures. Our data provide a plausible framework for Ptc1 clustering in the highly curved caveolae.

(1) Psychology must play an important role in the prevention and management of the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the present study was to examine associations between the perceptions of information overload and wellbeing in China during the initial phase of COVID-19. (2) Methods: The present research involved a cross-sectional online survey, which controlled for established predictors of wellbeing and the perception of general (not COVID-19-specific) information overload. The setting of the research was China, February 2020. A total of 1349 participants completed an online survey, and the results from 1240 members of the general public who stated that they were uninfected are reported here (55.6% female; 49.4% single; age distribution: 17-25 years: 26%; 26-30 years: 24.3%; 31-40 years: 23.9%; 41-50 years: 16.2%; 51 years+: 9.6%; the most frequent occupations were: 21.5% students; 19.5% teachers; 25.9% office workers; 10.8% managers, plus a few in a wide range of jobs). The outcomes were positive wellbeing (positive affect and life satisfaction) and negative wellbeing (stress, negative affect, anxiety and depression). (3) Results: Regressions were carried out, controlling for established predictors of wellbeing (psychological capital, general information overload, positive and negative coping). Spending time getting information about COVID-19 was associated with more positive wellbeing. In contrast, perceptions of COVID-19 information overload and feeling panic due to COVID-19 were associated with more negative wellbeing. (4) Conclusions: These results have implications for the communication of information about COVID-19 to the general public and form the basis for further research on the topic.

PURPOSE: To investigate the change in muscle volume around the hip in patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) after arthroscopy and evaluate other factors related to muscle change. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of magnetic resonance imaging data of patients with FAI who underwent hip arthroscopy. Magnetic resonance imaging was obtained pre- and postoperatively. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of muscles were determined on axial images. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to determine the differences between pre- and postoperative hip muscle CSA. The correlations of change in muscle CSA with age, sex, body mass index, pain level, preoperative symptom duration, follow-up time, and multiple validated patient-reported outcomes were also analyzed with a Spearman rank correlation test. RESULTS: Fifty-one patients with a mean age of 36.5 ± 5.6 years were included and analyzed. The follow-up was 26.6 ± 0.5 months (range, 24-40 months), and 27 (52.9%) were women. Patients with FAI showed increased hip muscle CSA of gluteus maximus (P = .002) and gluteus minimus (P = .001). Post- compared with preoperative, the value for the change in medius CSA was underpowered, and no differences in other hip muscle CSAs were observed. The increased muscle CSA of the gluteus maximus was significantly correlated with the improvement of modified Harris Hip Score (ρ = 0.404; P = .003). The increased muscle CSA of the gluteus minimus was significantly correlated with the improvement of pain Visual Analog Scale (ρ = 0.452; P = .001). Age, body mass index, sex, symptom duration, and follow-up time were not significantly correlated with change in muscle CSA. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with FAI have a significantly increased postoperative muscle CSA of the gluteus maximus (7.8%) and the gluteus minimus (11.6%) compared with preoperative values. The increased muscle CSA of the gluteus maximus and gluteus minimus was significantly correlated with improvement in modified Harris Hip Score and pain Visual Analog Scale, respectively. The increase of muscle volume may be associated with the improvement of subjective function and pain relief. LEVELS OF EVIDENCE: Level IV, therapeutic case series.
